MAKATI CITY, Philippines – On Tuesday, June 28, 9Works Theatrical recently launched its upcoming production titled ‘Sweet Charity’, which also had its press conference in Ballroom A of Dusit Thani Manila, Ayala Center, 12:30pm.

Kris Lawrence and Nikki Gil teams up as Oscar Lindquist and Charity Hope Valentine, respectively.
Back in 1966, ‘Sweet Charity’ premiered on Broadway and earned 12 Tony Awards. It also ran in West End, too. Dorothy Fields wrote the lyrics of the songs while Cy Coleman provided the music, but this musical based on Neil Simon’s book created a stir because of Bob Fosse who directed and choreographed the film version written by Federico Fellini, Ennio Flaiano and Tullio Pinelli in 1969 with Shirley MacLaine as Charity.

From left: Sheree Bautista (Carmen), Ciara Sotto (Helene) and Shiela Valderrama-Martinez (Nickie) performed together at the press conference.
Nikki Gil takes on the character of Charity Hope Valentine, the taxi dancer who continues to have faith in meeting the man of his dreams and was hoping that Oscar Lindquist to be portrayed by Star in a Million grand champion and R&B artist Kris Lawrence as his first venture into the theater musical.

The Sweet Charity cast gleefully posed before the press.
Gil, when asked what she has seen similarities and differences in today’s generation as opposed to the people in the 60s as depicted in the musical, she says, “The settings differ, but people do have the same struggles like that of Charity who continues to dream dreams.”
Part of the cast are Shiela Valderrama-Martinez, Ciara Sotto, Sheree Bautista, Miguel Faustmann, OJ Mariano, Angela Padilla, Caisa Borromeo, Chinie Nepomuceno, Vinia Pamplona, Carmelle Ros, Topper Fabregas, Job Bautista, Francis Matheu, Anthony Tarrosa Ong, Peter Alcedo, and Chai Relucio.
“The musical is more faithful to the 2005 version,” Robbie Guevarra reveals.
Lorenz Martinez serves as Guevarra’s assistant director, Joseph Tolentino as musical director – pit orchestra, Sweet Plantado as musical director for vocals, Mio Infante as scenographer, Martin Esteva as lighting designer, Hanna Delos Reyes shares credits with Mio Infante as costume stylist and designer, Dale Amon as graphic designer, and Roy Macam as photographer.
‘Sweet Charity’ opens on August 5 at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.
