Supsup was called-in to be in the 15th spot, joining the rest of the Top 16--during the first round of eliminations.
MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos were jubilant on their fellow ‘kababayan’ Shamcey Supsup's fate, who didn’t just make it to the Top 16 and Top 10 semi-finalists in the recently concluded 2011 Miss Universe beauty pageant in Credicard Hall in
São Paulo, Brazil , but also finished third runner-up to Miss Angola,
Leila Lopes--as the new title holder.
Among those who made it to the five finalists beating the rest of the 84 representatives from across the globe were: Ukraine’s
Olesia Stefanko (first runner-up), Brazil’s
Priscila Machado (second runner-up) and China’s
Luo Zilin (fourth runner-up).
During the preliminary rounds, Supsup was consistently on the second place for fan votes and was very straight-forward and spontaneous with her answer when asked by Viveca Fox: “Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person you love? Why or why not?”

She replied, “If I had to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love because the first person that I love is God who created me and I have my faith and my principles and this is what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God, too,”
Despite Supsup's straight forward and spontaneous answer, Miss Angola still stood out among all the 89 hopefuls and was proclaimed this year’s winner. The Philippines’ bet didn’t take it hard but was rather happy with the results.
Candidates included in the Top 16 were countries from: France, Kosovo, Colombia, Australia, Puerto Rico, Netherlands, USA, Panama, Costa Rica, Portugal, and Venezuela.
Special awards went to Panama as Best in National Costume, Sweden as Miss Photogenic and Montenegro as Miss Congeniality.
Another Filipina, who was part of the pageant's panel of judges—
Lea Salonga was the one who asked Miss Angola during the Top 5 Q&A.
The pageant was hosted by
Natalie Morales and
Andy Cohen with
Shandi Finnessey as hometown commentary host.
Supsup made it to the Top 5 finalists and was eventually proclaimed 3rd runner-up.
